I love fresh flowers on my table but I don’t always have them, so I decided the next best thing would be to make a table runner filled wth beautiful blossoms.
So I chose some of my favourite floral fabrics, a selection from Bari J and using the ‘faux’ appliqué technique I made some beautiful petals.
I lay a background fabric onto my table and then started laying out my flowers, auditioning different fabrics to see what worked.
I added in co-ordinating Moda ‘grunge’ fabric so the design would not be too busy.
I chose my main three flower fabrics and then used co-ordinating fabrics to fill in the flowers in between. p.s. I think I am in love already!
I decided to go with a completely different background fabric, I wanted something a bit more modern, so I chose this black and white fabric from Art Gallery Fabrics.
Quilting was easy, I didn’t want anything complicated that would take away from the simple design of the table runner.
I basically quilted around each flower and for the three larger flowers I did some simple quilting in the petals.
For the background of the table runner I quilted some squiggly lines, very simple and easy to do on a domestic machine as well.
The following pictures give better detail of the quilting.
And here are a couple of pics of the finished table runner, I bound it in the same fabric as the background fabric.
This pattern is available as a download and a paper pattern in my shop. (Just click here.)
I have made this table runner quite a few times because it is such a quick make.
It is very easy to do using the raw edge applique technique as well.

Is there a pattern for this beautiful table runner?
Lonna says
I am nit understanding the backgrounds fabric 2 1/2 inch strips and the spare strip. Where do they go and are they necessary?
Carolyn Murfitt says
Hello Lonna, I am sure what you mean, are you referring to the binding fabric?

What is meant by faux applique?
Carolyn Murfitt says
Hello Lisa,
Faux applique is an applique technique using interfacing to create the appliqué piece and then you iron it on to the background fabric and stitch into place.
