*********** Seed Burst quilt Pattern is available in my ‘Shop’ ***********
This ‘Seed Burst’ quilt was made with a dark blue batik background so the seeds could ‘burst’ from the background.
I chose an assortment of Malam Batiks for the seeds.
I set about making the seeds and then hung the background fabric onto the design wall and pinned the seeds onto it, checking for balance of colours and light and shade.
Once I was happy with the layout, I began the process of fusing and sewing on the seeds.
I added borders onto this quilt to make it a queen comforter size ( not quite a queen but bigger than a lap.)
Next it was time to quilt the top.
I used a gold thread for the seeds and a matching blue thread for the background and a bit of gold thread on the background in a few spots to add interest.
I love taking a quilt off the longarm and making sure my plan for quilting has married with the quilt design.
I am so happy with this quilt, I love the way the seeds pop from the background.
Love it!!

Hello Joanne,
It’s an RJR Fabric called mirage, I think ‘the Quilt Shop’ in Eltham stock the mirage fabrics.

When you do an all over dark background, do you use larger pieces or squares as in a standard quilt? I am making a “military life” quilt with my husbands old uniforms. I want the uniform to stand out with a darker background I am just not sure how to proceed in my design, with squares or larger pieces. Thank you for your input!
