The Big Magenta Star quilt.
I just HAD to ‘upscale’ my Magenta Star block into a nice big lap quilt.
This quilt is a real joy to make.
It comes together so easily and quickly, plus you get to use twelve of your favourite fat quarters for the main fabric.
You are bound to have twelve favourite fat quarters in your stash or your favourite fabric range normally has 12 fat quarters, so twelve fat quarters is the perfect amount to be featured in this quilt! 😂
I have designed two layouts for this quilt.
The first is a rainbow layout which I followed for the quilt pictured below, featuring twelve rainbow Kaffe Fassett fabrics. I have diagrams that detail where to put each fabric to create this graduated colour palette or you can choose to follow the random layout. The random layout uses twelve fat quarters also but they are randomly placed, well not so random because I have detailed diagrams outlying where every fabric is placed to create that ‘random’ look. 😂
I chose a rainbow of Kaffe Fassett fabric, I knew I would need twelve so I started with a few extra and narrowed it down to the perfect rainbow of twelve fat quarters.
I paired my twelve rainbow of Kaffe Fassett fabrics with two Hoffman 1895 batiks, the grape for the star and the mango for the centre.
What do you think of the finished quilt? I love the rainbow layout.
I also made this quilt in the Hoffman 1895 batiks. I chose a warm palette and used the rainbow layout but instead of a rainbow I graduated the colours into each other.
I chose a Kaffe Fassett fabric in similar colours for the centre and star fabric.
I love the richness of this quilt, the saturated colours really pop against the grey fabric.
My pattern tester, Josephine chose the random layout for her quilt, these fabrics were completely from her stash and I think the end result is very striking.
I think this quilt is a great use of your favourite fat quarters, what layout would you choose, random of rainbow?
In addition to the twelve fat quarters you will need 1 yard of fabric for your Star, one fat quarter for your centre fabric and 2 1/2 yards of fabric for your background and borders.
How big is this quilt? It’s approx. 71” square, so that is a nice big lap or bed quilt.
Just head to the shop in the menu tab to purchase this pattern.
